Any time a governing body – whether, federal, state or local – makes budget cuts, someone gets left in the cold, and the latest cost saving measure made by Portland City Council is no different. In a move that has political action groups ranging from Portland’s League of Young Votersto the Maine’s Green Independent Party crying foul, city councilors last week voted to reduce the number of polling places available for city voters by nearly two thirds. Beginning at the start of the new fiscal year in July, voters in Portland will have only six places to cast their votes on Election Day, down from 16 last November.
